Briget, Kristen Ford, Oh The Nerve, Rob Jamner at the Ivy Room

Briget will play first!

https://ivyroom.ticketfly.com/event/1843966/

Rob Jamner

Rob Jamner is an indie rock storyteller and poet. He thrives on ambiguity, playing with expectations in his music. Some moments are catchy and cathartic, others are surprising and sophisticated, and they all come together to make a singular, distinctive sound. Passionate about building community, Rob frequently collaborates with other artists to bring his songs to life.

Kristen Ford (Nashville, TN) plays indie rock which teeters into americana, electronic and pop. Her high energy live show as a one woman looping band has brought her to 48 states and 6 countries. No stranger to the recording studio, she has a slew of songs under her belt, her latest "Travel Songs" released on The Nation of Love Records.

Oh The Nerve

Oh The Nerve is a queer feminist pop/R&B band from Berkeley, California. They blend the exuberant grooves of vintage soul and sonic textures of electropop with honest and vulnerable songwriting about relationships, representation, and identity.

Briget Boyle is a vocalist, songwriter, and guitar player based in Oakland, California. Her music showcases her diverse musical influences of Americana country, Eastern European vocal music, and '90s rock. From a recent review on comeherefloyd.com: "You’d do yourself a favor to go and listen to the works of the melodic voice that drenches songs like ‘Heart-Shaped Mirror’. It’s good for your heart."

Briget has a rich and diverse musical history. Growing up in Los Angeles, Briget sang backup for her mother, recording artist Karen Tobin, and worked with her father in Hollywood's film scoring studios. She began writing songs as a teenager and played guitar in rock and jazz ensembles. She then attended the College of Santa Fe as a Music Performance and Composition major. After college, Briget sang for eight years with Kitka Eastern European Women's Vocal Ensemble, one of the most respected American groups performing Balkan folk music today. After leaving Kitka, Briget co-founded True Life Trio, an innovative ensemble that explores music from the Balkans and the Americas.

Briget and The Gossamer Strings at Octopus Literary Salon

Join us for an intimate evening of song-sharing at one of Oakland's sweetest live music venues.

The Gossamer Strings is an old-time folk music duo with rich harmonies over beautiful instrumentation on guitar, banjo and mandolin (no, not all three at the same time), and haunting original songwriting by Kyle McGonegle and Liat Tova Lis. They unravel a new story in each song with clear and heartfelt singing that exposes the emotion hidden in the verse. Their tight instrumentation brings each song to another level, as the pair breathes together, not just in their harmonies, but also through their instruments. The pair invites listeners into their world with warm conversation like old friends.

For many years one of the Bay Area’s premier Balkan dance bands, Édessa is comprised of musicians who have devoted decades to the study and performance of the rich cultural expressions of the southern Balkans. They play with a deep understanding of the connection between dance and music. Using both traditional and modern instruments, they perform in a variety of styles, featuring long sets that interweave melodies, improvisation and a beat with dancers in mind. The music comes from Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Armenia, and Turkey, and Balkan Roma (Gypsy). The group and its members have long participated in and taught at Balkan camps across the country, and Édessa was the first band to take Balkan music to Japan.

True Life Trio performs riveting vocal harmonies from Eastern Europe, the Americas & beyond. This innovative trio explores the creative possibilities of cross-fertilization of different traditions with unlikely timbres connecting Bulgaria to the Bayou.  TLT’s improvisation-laced repertoire includes original songs and folk tunes from far-flung lands such as Albania, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Macedonia, Mexico, Poland, Ukraine and the American South.

Fanfare Zambaleta was incubated in the Zambaleta Music and Dance School in San Francisco and has since transformed into a full-fledged juggernaut of a band, featuring some of the Bay Area's most exciting young players and seasoned veterans. Emulating the great Balkan brass bands of the past and present, they play Romani, Serbian, Macedonian and Greek brass band music with passion and dedication. FZ's potent musical concoction of wild improvisation, meticulous ensemble coordination,  earth-shaking low brass, thunderous drumming and jubilant vocals will move your feet and lift your soul.

ABOUT:
Names were drawn out of a hat to create new bands. Names were drawn out five-at-a-time. Those five people are now a band. Five drummers? A band. Two acapella singers, a ukulelist, and a death metal guitarist? A band. Two bassists, a bassoonist, and a guy who has never played a show in his life? A band.

The newly-formed bands have one month to write and rehearse 10 minutes of original music, to be performed at Neck of The Woods on Friday, August 17th. There will be prizes. Glorious prizes.
