Meeting the Muse: Women Songwriters at the Monkey House

  • The Monkey House 1638 University Avenue Berkeley, CA, 94703 United States (map)

Meeting the Muse is a monthly showcase featuring women songwriters from the Bay Area and beyond. Our first show will feature three of our hosts: Briget Boyle, Irina Rivkin, and Marianne Barlow. We hope to see you there!

Briget Boyle is a songwriter, vocalist, and guitar player based in Oakland, California. As part of a full schedule of performing, teaching, and touring, Briget and a talented group of guest musicians have just finished recording Briget's second album, The Next Line, which will be available in fall 2018. Briget has a rich and diverse musical history. Growing up in Los Angeles, Briget sang backup for her mother, recording artist Karen Tobin, and worked with her father in Hollywood's film scoring studios. She began writing songs as a teenager and played guitar in rock and jazz ensembles. She then attended the College of Santa Fe as a Music Performance and Composition major. After college, Briget sang for eight years with Kitka Eastern European Women's Vocal Ensemble, one of the most respected American groups performing Balkan folk music today. After leaving Kitka, Briget co-founded True Life Trio, an innovative ensemble that explores music from the Balkans and the Americas.

OutMusic Awardee Irina Rivkin layers poetic lyrics with rich textured harmonies, swirling with vocal percussive beats, all created live on-the-spot using her loop station instrument. Rivkin “performs her own breathtaking act as a "live one-woman choir" (using digital looping technology to astonishing effect)” Michael Dougan, SF Chronicle

Marianne Barlow lives in Oakland, CA and teaches beginning piano, guitar and ukulele to kids and kids-at-heart. She directs the Berkeley-based Organic Women's Chorus and performs solo and with the Merry Ukuladies, all over the Bay Area. Singer-songwriter and business coach Christine Kane says, “Marianne Barlow’s music speaks of beauty and depth. She weaves haunting emotional and personal lyrics with strong melodies and rhythms to create some real gems.” (focused on my music teaching business) (link to hear and purchase my music)
